CHYULU HILLS NATIONAL PARK

The 741 sq km Chyulu Hills National Park is located in south east Kenya, close to Tsavo West and Amboseli National Park.  The National Park comprises the eastern flanks of the Chyulu hills including about half the forested area. The boundary runs down the centre of the Hills, along the line of peaks.  The remaining western portion of the hills is part of the West Chyulu Game Conservation Area and owned by several Maasai group ranches. With altitude varying from 1,500 to 2,160 metres, Chyulu Hills is a dramatic, partly semi arid range of hills, formed by lava flows.

The area has a hot and dry climate while the vegetation is rough grassland and thickets, some with mountane forest.  It is home to a variety of wildlife, though lesser in diversity than some of the major parks in Kenya.   Animals to be found the in and around the Park include elephant, buffalo, giraffe, zebra, eland, leopard and bush pig.  Over 300 species of birds have been recorded including some rare forest birds.  On a clear day, the snow-capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro, Africa’s tallest mountain, can be seen to the west
