KIWAYU ISLAND

Kiwayu island is located in Kenya’s Indian Ocean coast, in the Kiunga Marine Reserve, about 30 miles north-east of Lamu archipelago.  The island is 12 miles long by a half mile wide, with a six mile virgin beach, has two villages inhabited mainly by fishermen.  Arabian traders in their traditional dhows had for centuries made Kiwayu a vital calling point en route from Arabia to Mombasa and Zanzibar, with wares such as ivory, carpets and carved chests.

In the protected waters surrounded by a natural reef, you can spot dolphins, sea turtles and the nocturnal dugong as well as many types of coral fish, tuna, marlin, sailfish, wahoo, king fish and many other sports fish.  There are lots of caves and coves to explore and the extensive mangrove creek is a paradise for bird watching.  On the mainland, to the west lies Boni and Dodori National Reserves, vital areas for the protection of the flora and fauna of the ecosystem.  Animals that inhabit these reserves are often migratory such as elephants and buffalo.  Permanent resident game includes lion, cheetah, serval cat, caracal, lesser kudu and the rate hunting dog.
