MOUNT LONGONOT

Located 90 kilometres from Nairobi, in the Great Rift Valley, and close to Lake Naivasha, Mount Longonot is a young extinct volcano with a collapsed crater rising to an altitude of 2,776 metres.

The sides of the mountain have beautiful v-shaped valleys and ridges and the stony soils have little vegetation, though the crater has an impenetrable forest.

The name Longonot is derived from the Maasai word Oloonong’ot, meaning mountain of many spurs and steep ridges.  From the top, you get incredible views of Lake Naivasha, the Rift Valley escarpment and the Aberdares Mountain Range.  The Longonot National Park covers an area of 52sq km, most of which is covered by the mountain.  Day trips from Nairobi and Naivasha – for a hike up to the top and rim of the crater and back to base are arranged.
