RUAHA NATIONAL PARK

The 10,300 km sq Ruaha National Park is Tanzania’s second largest park and the world’s largest elephant sanctuary. This is pristine and untouched Africa, unsullied by minibus tourism and large lodges.  Although set in spectacular scenery with an abundance of wildlife, the park is one of the lesser visited in the country, keeping it an isolated and peaceful wilderness. Ruaha is bordered in the north by the Kizigio and Rungwa River Game Reserves, and together they form a 26,500km² conservancy, one of the biggest in East Africa.

Amongst the game found at the park are elephants, buffalos, giraffes, cheetahs, lions, leopards, wild dogs, monkeys as well as a wide variety of antelope including greater and lesser kudu, eland, hartebeest and over 465 recorded species of birdlife. The best months to visit are from July to November when the animals congregate around the water holes, but the park is stunning all year round.

Ruaha is visually a treat, with rocky outcrops and mountain ranges giving it a topography that ranges from 750m to 1,900m on the peak of Ikungu Mountain.  The focal point of the Park is the Great Ruaha River, with its deep gorges, swirling rapids and excellent fishing. Ruaha river is fed by the waters of its main feeder, the Mzombe and various seasonal tributaries.
