SHIMBA HILLS

Located 33 kms south of Mombasa, Shimba Hills are a dissected plateau that ascends steeply from the coastal Kwale plains.  The surrounding escarpement rises from around 120 metres to 300 metres across the bulk of the plateau and as high as 450 metres at Marare and Pengo hills.  Shimba Hills is only second to Arabuko Sokoke forest in area of the coastal rain forest in East Africa.

The vegetation consists of forested scarp slopes and undulating grassland interspersed with woodland clumps and ribbons of riverrine forest in the steeply cut valleys.  Elephants, giraffe, buffalo and the unique sable antelopes are some of the animals found in the Reserve.  Walking excursions can be arranged to the Scheldricks Falls in the Reserve.  A fenced elephant corridor connects Shimba Hills to the adjacent Mwaluganje Forest Reserve to the north.  Rivers flowing from the hills supply fresh water to Mombasa and Diani/Ukunda area.
